Furthering the point are these Swift's Brookfield ads, all from the early '30s.  The popover and dahlia combination is my favorite.

Got a new 1913 seed and tree catalog yesterday - here's some lusciousness.  (I enjoy poring over antique seed catalogs whilst letting my actual garden go entirely untended.)

I really believe one'd be hard-pressed to a more perfect or beautiful depiction of apples.  Hand-painted lithograph from what must have been a quite high end guide to fruits or botany or somethin'.

And we've got the ephemera-collecting niche of the seed/garden catalog.  They too contained gasp-inducing (I'm only speaking for myself) illustrations of fruit.  These are from 1936.

And Mastodon strawberries!

And then there are the floral illustrations in these catalogs and many of them are just mad.  Here the centerfold, sadly somewhat cropped by my scanner.
