During WWII there were many ads in magazines exhorting housewives to do their part by reducing the food intake of their families, thus leaving more to be shipped by the troops; that and stretching every dollar in order to buy war bonds were common themes in ads: "war work" was a phrase one saw in reference to it, as below.  Imagine today's Americans being asked to do without a single thing for our ongoing war efforts. Ha bleedin' ha, it's a laugh enit.  Say, these pictures're pretty nice though!
